Welcome to our Maadi Mart!
During the lockdown, tired of my IT job, I turned a small storage room on my terrace into a kitchen. It was the first place in a long time where I felt alive,where I rediscovered joy.
After that, I quit and backpacked across every state in India with one goal: to understand each place's culture, its food, and to forage for the unique ingredients it had to offer. When I came back, I knew I had to put that knowledge to use.
The supermarkets in India are some of the most boring I've been to anywhere. Around the world, walking into a supermarket gives you the thrill of discovering something new and unexpected. But here, it's 90% the same - identical products stacked in every store, on every street, in every city.
Maadi Mart was started to change that.
After months of traveling and deep, on-the-ground research, I saw how rich and diverse India's food landscape really is. Every region has its own ingredients, its own pantry, its own personality. But most of that never makes it to the shelves.
We've become so obsessed with the West that peri peri and Nashville hot are now everywhere - while our own local gems are forgotten.
This wasn't started to reinvent the wheel, it was started to bring the wheel home. To celebrate what we already have. To make space for ingredients, condiments, and flavors that truly represent India. To take Western and Asian influences and use them the way we know best - to create something uniquely our own.
That's what Maadi Mart is all about.
